The Masonic Hotel, Waitara is a newly renovated boutique hotel which was opened in July 1880. Waitara is located just off State Highway 3, 15 km northeast of New Plymouth.

The Hotel features 8 rooms – 7 King size beds which can be converted to singles, and 1 Queen size bed. All the rooms have ensuites with flat screen TVs, coffee & tea making facilities, luxury bed linen and pillows, bathroom amenities and wireless internet.

About Us

In 2014 the Hotel has undergone major renovation including the modernisation with new bathrooms, lighting, plumbing and insulation. Guest rooms have air conditioning.

Waitara is a thriving town with a local population of 7000. The beach, coastline and Waitara River are within walking distance from the Hotel.


Taranaki is renowned as the home of amazing events. From huge concerts at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands to intimate exhibitions to races around our magnificent mountain, there something for everyone.

Waitara History

The commonly accepted meaning of the name Waitara is ‘mountain stream’, though Maori legend also states that it was originally Whai-tara ‘path of the dart’. In 1867 the settlement was named Raleigh, after Sir Walter Raleigh. It reverted to its former name Waitara in 1904.
